The Las Vegas Raiders have a head coach in Sin City and it is a familiar face to many. The Las Vegas Raiders have officially announced the hiring of Pete Carroll as their new head coach early Friday morning. Though there is much more information yet to be released including the specifics of the contract, what is known publicly is the contract is a three-year deal that extends through 2027-28 NFL season. The 73 year old Carroll is no stranger to fans of the league as he was best known being the leader during the Russell Wilson regime, including a victory in Super Bowl 48.
Carroll, who was the head coach of the Seahawks since 2010, took on the role of Senior Advisor for Seattle this past season. After one year in the front office, it appears that one year was enough for Coach Carroll as he looks to get back onto the sideline. With the Raiders in desperate need for a coach of stability and experience, they hope that Carroll is the answer to get Vegas out of the basement of the AFC West. With the AFC West having some of the greatest coaches in the NFL with Andy Reid(KC), Jim Harbaugh(LAC) and Sean Payton(DEN), it was apparent that Vegas has been lacking in the coaching department for nearly the past decade.
Concerns among critics and fans are that Carroll's age could get in the way. Following this news, Carroll is officially the oldest head coach hired in NFL History. Carroll, who is set to turn 74 during the season, will be in his upper seventies in the final year of his contract. The NFL has changed drastically since Carroll has entered the league and it is clear that teams have trended toward younger coaches to lead teams. As the 2025 NFL Draft and training camp approach, we will be sure to hear more about how Carroll is getting adjusted with his new team.
